Resurfacing!

Phew!  This “regular” blog posting is quite overdue!  Can I just say what a whirlwind it’s been these past few years – between becoming self-employed AND having a baby IN THE SAME YEAR?  I’m just going to come right out and say it: I thought all of this would be a whole heckuvalot easier than it actually was.

Some background here … I’m notoriously an over-performer, Type-A, Wonder Woman, “get it all done” kind of gal.  While getting Plumb Architecture off the ground, I was working full time + overtime at another architecture firm in town, working on side projects for Plumb – trying to build up clients and project inventory, step mom to a stellar (then) elementary schooler, coach of the Austin High Mountain Bike Team, planning a 150 person multi-track Green Schools Symposium for the local Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council, writing curriculum for a completely revamped Architecture in Schools Program for the local Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, all while still managing some workouts and even some athletic competitions.  For some reason, I thought if my life was pared down to maybe just ONE job, ONE volunteer committee leadership position, and caring for my tiny human – that life would be just swell.  Holy moly – was I wrong!

It turns out, starting a business is a lot like birthing a child.  There’s an incubation period where you read all of the books, plan things out, get this shimmery beautiful image of what you THINK things are going to look like.  Then.  Suddenly.  You’re sitting in your own office trying to simultaneously bring in work while sending out work while paying the bills while generating enough invoicing to pay those bills (and, there are quite a few bills that start-up year!) while learning new programs (ugh – QuickBooks) while researching health insurance plans (and, if pregnant – then also growing a whole human being and daydreaming of napping all day long without having to get up 97 times to use the potty).

A lot has happened in these past three years.  My tiny human is not so tiny any longer, and has started preschool.  My other “baby” – Plumb Architecture – is also growing.  I’m excited that it feels like I’m hitting my stride. So.  With this, I plan to make more blog postings to the website – to discuss everything from projects “on the boards”, to my own experiences living through a residential remodel, to striving for that ever elusive “work/life balance”, to general design discussions.

Please follow along as I rehash some of my favorite moments from the past few years, as well as share exciting developments and stories that have yet to happen.
